This is one of the most common questions I get
Patients will come in and say:
“I’ve heard about MTHFR… or COMT… do I need to worry about that?”
And the answer is not “yes” or “no.”
The better answer is:
It depends on how your body is using the tools it was given.

Before we go further, let’s simplify this.
Your genes are like instructions.
They tell your body how to:
process nutrients
regulate stress
make and break down brain chemicals
They don’t determine everything.
But they do set the foundation for how your system functions.
Why this matters for mental health
Your brain relies on a very specific balance of chemicals to feel stable.
Things like mood, focus, motivation, and stress response all depend on how well your body can:
create neurotransmitters
clear them appropriately
regulate your nervous system
Genes like MTHFR and COMT play a role in these processes.
What is MTHFR?
Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a gene that helps your body process folate (a B vitamin-B9 to be exact).
Folate is essential for:
making neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine
supporting detoxification

If this pathway is less efficient, your body may have a harder time:
producing neurotransmitters
