This is one of the most common questions I get

Patients will come in and say:

“I’ve heard about MTHFR… or COMT… do I need to worry about that?”

And the answer is not “yes” or “no.”

The better answer is:

It depends on how your body is using the tools it was given.

Your genes are like instructions.

They tell your body how to:

  • process nutrients

  • regulate stress

  • make and break down brain chemicals

They don’t determine everything.

What is MTHFR?

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) is a gene that helps your body process folate (a B vitamin-B9 to be exact).

If this pathway is less efficient, your body may have a harder time:

  • producing neurotransmitters

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) is a gene involved in breaking down certain brain chemicals—especially dopamine.

Dopamine influences:
