Some women move through their cycle with minimal symptoms.

Others experience:

  • anxiety that comes and goes

  • mood shifts that feel intense or hard to explain

  • irritability, overwhelm, or emotional sensitivity

  • sleep changes before their cycle

And often, they’re told:

“Your labs are normal.”“This is just hormonal.”

But that doesn’t explain why it feels so different for you.

Quick recap: how your body processes hormones

Before we go deeper, let’s simplify this.

Your body is constantly producing and breaking down hormones like estrogen and progesterone.

This process has two parts:

  • making hormones

  • clearing them when they’re no longer needed

If either side is off, your system can feel out of balance.

And this is where your genetics come in.

What estrogen and progesterone actually do

Estrogen and progesterone don’t just affect your cycle.

They directly influence your brain.

Estrogen tends to:

  • increase serotonin and dopamine

  • improve mood and motivation

  • increase stimulation in the nervous system

Progesterone tends to:

  • calm the nervous system

  • support sleep

  • reduce anxiety through its calming effect on the brain

When these hormones are balanced, most people feel stable.

When they’re not, symptoms can show up quickly.

Where genetics fit in

Your body uses specific pathways to process hormones.

Two of the most important genes involved are:

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR)Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT)

You don’t need to remember the names.

What matters is what they do.

MTHFR: supporting detox and hormone balance

MTHFR helps your body process folate and support a system called methylation.

This system is important for:

  • detoxification

  • neurotransmitter production

  • hormone processing

If this pathway is less efficient, your body may:

  • have a harder time clearing excess estrogen

  • struggle with detox pathways

  • feel more sensitive to hormonal shifts

This can show up as:

  • mood changes around your cycle

  • feeling worse before your period

  • sensitivity to hormonal birth control

COMT: clearing estrogen and stress hormones

COMT helps break down:

  • dopamine (a key brain chemical)

  • estrogen (after it’s been processed by the liver)

Some people clear these more quickly.Others clear them more slowly.

If COMT is slower you may experience:

  • stronger emotional responses

  • increased sensitivity to stress

  • feeling “wired but tired”

  • more intense symptoms when estrogen is higher

This is because estrogen can stay active in the system longer—and estrogen is stimulating.

PMS, PMDD, and estrogen clearance

This is where this becomes especially important.

Conditions like Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) are often described as “hormonal.”

But many times, the issue is not just hormone levels.

It’s how your body is processing and clearing estrogen.

If estrogen is not being cleared efficiently:

  • it can remain elevated or active longer than it should

  • the balance between estrogen and progesterone shifts

  • the nervous system becomes more stimulated

This can lead to:

  • increased anxiety

  • irritability or rage

  • mood swings

  • feeling overwhelmed or emotionally reactive

Especially in the second half of your cycle.

For women with PMDD, the nervous system is often more sensitive to these hormonal shifts.

So even normal changes can feel intense.

Why some women feel worse before their period

In the days before your period:

  • estrogen and progesterone both drop

If your system is already sensitive:

  • this shift can feel abrupt

  • your nervous system can become more reactive

  • anxiety and mood symptoms can increase

This is often labeled as PMS or PMDD.

But again—the question is:

Why is your system responding this way?

A note on postpartum mood changes

Hormonal shifts don’t just happen during your cycle.

They also occur after pregnancy.

Postpartum depression is often discussed in emotional terms—but there is a significant biological component.

After delivery:

  • estrogen and progesterone are supposed to drop rapidly

  • the nervous system has to recalibrate quickly

If your system is already sensitive—whether due to genetics, stress, nutrient depletion, or hormone processing—this shift can feel overwhelming. Or the shift may not be happening in a balanced way because of your COMT gene.

This can contribute to:

  • low mood

  • anxiety

  • irritability

  • feeling disconnected or unlike yourself
